Chapter Six Reflection

I thought this chapter was very interesting and brought up some very important topics to prepare for and think about for when I have my classroom. Throughout the chapter, I couldn't help but think about what if race was completely eliminated from our society. What if the only option was if you were a human being, please check this box? After thinking about this, yes it would make the U.S. Census easier, but would it make anything else easier? People's identity would be lost, and I can only imagine the amount of chaos that would occur. Also, when discussing racial events that occurred in history and the fact that some teachers may not want to discuss such topics, was shocking to me. I feel like not being able to discuss the history in a non judgmental way, is cheating students out of their education. Topics such as slavery and concentration camps may be a sensitive topic, but using the resources available (children's literature, movies, etc) can help teachers teach this topic. I remember when I was learning about slavery one of my classmates told me her grandmother housed run away slaves and helped them head North. I thought this was the coolest thing ever, and it enhanced my learning because I was able to connect history to a person I knew.

  1. When I was reading this chapter, I thought of “box checking” in tests like the ACT, it’s interesting to think about the changes in things like the census if race was eliminated. So thanks for the thought! Also, I like your perspective on the discussion of racial events in a classroom. I agree that if teachers have a blind eye towards topics in history such as slavery it is ultimately detrimental to the students, and society as a whole. Last thing, I really liked your connection at the end. That’s awesome!!! It’s rare to hear those stories. That’s really neat.
